Interesting Conversation
Today for the first time ever in school I had a good conversation with a teacher. Me and my friends were having a conversation with my business managment teacher about games. It was really about games that make you learn things but hey, It was the best conversation ever.
-Update-
Heh, Mr.Hamilton must have the magic touch or something, I posted my blog on my twitter page and I diddn’t get a single comment. Good job!
I am sorry this is the first time you have had a good conversation with a teacher – but better late than never. I think I can guess the teacher. Are you using any games in your classes in school?
James, great blog. Mr Hamiliton pointed me towards it. You might be interested in this free games development software for creating games on the Xbox. Its called Kodu, its free. The PC version will be out shortly, mr Hamiliton will have all the details on his return from the BETT show. So make sure you ask him.
I completely agree with the idea of learning through games. I would suggest that playing poker is a great way to learn about risk taking (very important in business), however I suspect you are talking about computer games, which I believe again teach valuable lessions. CS:S is a great team game, RTS games are great at teaching stratergy and resource management. Of course you get those how blame games for corruption the young but I would read this post http://naiboss.blogspot.com/2006/09/are-gamers-killers.html from a friend of mine who happens to be an IT manager at a school.
Just came across this article which I though might be of interest about games teaching pupils. It also talked about a drawback of making all learning fun, as in the real world most people get a job which is pretty boring and if you have not learnt about dealing with ‘boring’ at school (because everything is fun) this will have a negative effect on your life. I’ve not thought of that before – seems to make sense:
